Granny’s Cutting Board

The heart of Granny’s and Grandpa’s house was always the kitchen, and at the heart of their kitchen was always this cutting board.

Propped on the window ledge above the kitchen sink, we have a decorative cutting board the real estate company gifted to us when we bought the house; it’s small, a warm golden grain that looks like bamboo, and it says, “KITCHEN heart of the home.”

Certainly that’s true in some homes, but I wouldn’t say it’s true in ours.

The heart of our house might be the living room, where my husband Dylan and I tend to eat our meals in front of the TV, or it might be the media room, where he’s currently on PS5 and I’m about to go in there so I can get on, too. (Thus far, I only play Sims 4 and still consider myself more of a Nintendo girl.) The heart of our house is probably any where our dog is.

But the heart of Granny’s and Grandpa’s house was always the kitchen, and at the heart of their kitchen was always this cutting board.

Recently, my mom and dad moved Granny and Grandpa — Mom’s parents — to the same nursing home in Bryan where Nonnie, Dad’s mom, lives, and where until July 22, Papa did, too.
